A gift

I admit it.

I am a spine bender.
A dog ear-er.
A page smell-er.
A book lover.

I'm not sure I have mentioned this on my blog, but this semester I decided to take a shot at book binding.  The class is pretty intense and I am learning so much on honing the craft of fine art books.

Yesterday was a friend's birthday and I had assembled a simple accordion fold book filled with some beloved cocktail recipes.

I've tried most things from simple one-page fold books, three-hole binding, hardcover assembly, Coptic binding, etc.  It's fun and magical.  Thom teases me that I leave every Monday morning for my "arts-and-crafts" class.

There are paper scraps, glue, tiny string bits, and miscellaneous all over my studio space.

I love it.

SPE 2012

I got to listen to this lovely lady the other night.  It was truly a great conference, filled with inspiring talks and new possibilities.  I left that night feeling excited, tired and with two beautiful signed books.

Come on in!

Front facade of the house.

Some photos of my new apartment.  I've had some instant film just wasting away in my refrigerator and decided to use it to take my house tour photos with.  Good thing too, since one box was already expired, chemicals leaking everywhere, a mess.  Instant film is both a great love and pain to work with.  I love to take a snapshot and peel back the film after it has developed.  Sadly, my Polaroid's bellows are starting to bow inward and they have begun to mask the edges of my film.

A few photos are from this past weekend's potluck house warming party.  Thanks to all that made it.  It was very warm (mid-70's) and there was lots of food and fun.

This week is my thesis presentation...
There has been a lot of hard work and preparation.  And yet I still feel nervous and unprepared.

So if you can, send some positive thoughts my way!

Front steps and pretty tile landing.

The front room with beautiful decorative fireplace and built-ins.  Not that you would know it since we blocked the fireplace with a T.V.

Front bay windows
Friends at the party.

Other half of the front room, housing the keyboard.
Roommate, friends, myself.
Long hallway that Connor likes to run down.

An office/art studio space to sew, drawn, paint in.

Breakfast nook in kitchen.
Friends at party.
Some flowers, handbound work books, and a on-loan typewriter.
View out of bedroom.
Extra photo studio space and Connor.

Whats been up lately

Hello all!

From my last post, I've had the time to move, settle in, unpack, and rearrange.  And as I mentioned earlier, I will be posting some inside pics of my sweet new pad but today I wanted to share a few other things that I've been into lately.  (You really don't want to see my unvacuumed floors, messy piles of photo supplies, etc!)

Listed below are my current obsessions and make up for lack of posts!

1.  Boardwalk Empire
I am obsessed!  I am already half way in the second season.  Thom and I watch an episode or so a night.  I will be so sad when I finally catch up to the upcoming season 3.
After watching the Academy Awards and the five awards to Hugo, I understand why Scorsese created the fantastical world of robots and child heroes.  (A VERY mild and milked down version of genre he usually partakes in)  He took all his violence, sex, booze and drugs out on Boardwalk!  And of course, the costuming, set design and cinematography is a TV series masterpiece.  (Above is the two year old Vanity Fair spread of the leading ladies in the show.)

2.  Gold Arrow and Gold Bracelet set from Mary Beth Heishman for $50.  I bought this set and can't wait to get it.  I love the simple design and use of the front length of the bracelet as the object.

3.  Ingrid Michaelson's newest album, Human Again.  On repeat.  This video of Ghost is great and directed by Ingrid herself.

4.  Natalie Stopka.  I am currently taking a book binding class and man-alive!  My perspective of books has been shattered and redefined.  I stumbled upon Stopka's books through a random search and I love her work.  She lives in Brooklyn and sells her work through small shops and etsy.  I love her ombre linen bound hardcover book pictured above.

Finally, if you aren't on Pinterest, join!  Be my friend, follow my boards and ultimately gather inspiration from the inter-webs.

More soon!
